Communication and Language

Communication and Language is one of the prime areas of learning from birth to 5 years of age.

There are two main aspects:

  • Understanding

  • Speaking

For babies we focus on the way they listen to and distinguish sounds, react and interact with others, communicate their needs and feelings to others, ‘babble’, then start to understand words and to copy and make sounds.

For toddlers we focus on the way they listen to stories and show interest in songs and rhymes, understand simple concepts, use language to show feelings and express their thoughts, learn new words rapidly and start to use simple sentences.

For pre-school children we focus on the way they concentrate and sit quietly, respond to instruction, listen to and respond to each other, extend vocabulary and use language to clarify their thinking and ideas.
