Mathematics is one of the specific areas of learning from birth to 5 years of age.

There are two main aspects:

  • Numbers
  • Shape, space and measure

For older babies we focus on the way they develop an awareness of number names through action rhymes.

For toddlers we focus on the way they recite some number names in sequence, make comparisons and use the language of size and quantity, notice simple shapes and patterns, understand immediate past and future and anticipate events.

For pre-school children we focus on recognising numbers and counting confidently, estimating and working out simple mathematical problems, using mathematical names for shapes and measuring and ordering objects.
