Understanding the World

Understanding the World is one of the prime areas of learning from birth to 5 years of age.

There are three main aspects:

  • People and communities

  • The World

  • Technology

For babies we focus on the way they follow moving objects with their eyes, react to people or things, smile with pleasure at familiar toys, react to playthings they recognise and repeat actions.

For toddlers we focus on the way they have a sense of their own family, imitate everyday actions and have their own friends, enjoy playing with small world activities, seek to operate some ICT equipment and mechanical toys.

For pre-school children we focus on enjoying family customs and routines, look at similarities and differences, patterns and changes and use a simple program on the computer as well developing a confidence in using technological equipment.
